Happy New Year

Happy 2008 to all I hope all had a good night.

I went off to Princes Street and the street party it was good fun. Started off with drinks at Liz's place before going off to the street and listening to Idle Wild before watching the fire works from Castle and Carlton Hill. The ones from the castle were obscured by their own smoke after a few minutes but still pretty colours.

Today I am off to see my first film of the year Balls of Fury.

I also have to go shopping at the weekend to buy a new skirt as my flatmates very kindly brought me a course of belly dancing lessons starting next Tuesday.

Good bye Hong Kong

Well I leave here in a few hours for a very long flight back to the UK I have had a fun week. I could happily stay here longer I think I would learn to adapt to the heat of the day. There is certainly a lot more of the island I have yet to explore.

Today I went shopping and to visit another temple this time the temple of Wong Tia Sin. This was another place where incense was heavy in the air to the point at parts you couldn't see the temple the air was so thick. I picked up a packet of papers and an image of Wong Tia Sin who is meant to bring good fortune to you and your family.

I also went back to watch the light show got lost and visited the botanical gardens in the dark and a mosque both eerie and beautiful.

My poor guide book is looking a little like me wilted from the heat.

Todays set of photos including a few shots from the harbour show.

Today's adventures

Today has been very busy started at "The Peak" and ended with toast and coffee in my hotel room.

The Peak is one of the highest easily accessible points on the island. I was very lucky it was a clear day so I got a very good view all around the island from the top of the building. I spent a happy hour wandering around looking at all the exciting things up there. I spotted the perfect house just next to the rain track that runs between street level and the peak which is an almost vertical track.

After that I took myself off to Ocean Bay the local theme park with Sharks, Jelly Fish and Sea Lions mixed in with the rides. I am a great fan of jelly fish they were really well lit up in the display cabinets with changing coloured lights. Took many photos of them as the lights cycled.

The end of the day saw me at the Temple Street Market which is a weird and wonderful place full of all sorts of bargains. I spent I think about 20 pounds and bought 2 t-shirts one a ferrie red one, Liz's piece of weird tata, a new purse and two watches. All of these i got to practice my barging skills which was fun.

I forgot to post last night that I was at the show of lights on the harbour front. I intend to go back tomorrow to take more pictures from the view point of the avenue of stars.

Happy mid autumn

Today is the mid autumn celebration and the first truly sunny day of the week. I made the most of the sun to take a walk around some of the unexplored parts of both the island and the main land. I found an outside shrine and a working temple it was very different to the monastery with large incense coils hanging from the ceiling filling the air with a heavy scent to the point of over powering at points. All the coils had messages written on them asking the buddha for something. I stayed for a while to watch some of the activities. It is a very busy place so taking pictures was a little difficult as I didn't want to upset anyone praying.

Tian Tan Buddha Statue

Today was another wet day maybe even wetter than yesterday due to being up a mountain. I went to visit the Po Lin Monastery and Tian Tan Buddha who sits on top of Lantau Island. He is a very impressive site and the monastery was really interesting as well. I had to climb lots of steps to get to the buddha himself after taking long bus ride on some very odd roads. I was planning to take the cable car but it was out of action.

The monastery served some very good vegetertain food the speciality of the place is bean curd sheet with lemon in it, really tasty and I am getting better at using chop sticks although I had a bit of a problem picking up mushrooms.

Here a few pictures from the day.

Photos from Monday

Today I discovered that Hong Kong central doesn't have much in the way of inside entertainment that is not shopping Kawloon does have at least two amazing museums. I spent my day in two very interesting museums on the sea front.

Here a few pictures taken so far to give you an idea of what I am looking at.

Monday

Still very excited to be here and I think my body clock has finally reset itself to where it should be.

I did make plans today to see the Big Buddha on the outlining island but the weather has changed to light rain for today and then bright for the rest of the week according to the BBC.

First Impressions of Hong Kong are very favourable the hotel is quiet amazing and the staff very friendly. From my room which is on the top floor I have a view into the middle of the island and its two of its peaks straight in front of me.

I went exploring last night to the main area of the island Causeway Bay it is a mass of neon lights and advertising boards all very exciting and constantly moving. I also found a great little restaurant just under the hotel that seems to serve some really good meals. I was struck by the fact I was the only none Asian person in there but they did thankfully have an English version of the menu I could look at. I need more practice with chop sticks I am very rusty. I also got to watch them preparing Peking Duck which was quiet a novelty I don't think I will eat it while I am here but always interesting to look at.

It seems so far to easy to get around the whole place the underground rail system (MRT) goes just about everywhere between Honk Kong Island and Kowloon, the Star Ferry doing the rest of the trips. To make it easier all of the take an Octopus card. This is just a pre paid card that you activate by pressing on the sensor like any other pre pay travel card and you top it up when it runs out.

Today I plan to explore Hong Kong central looking for places to keep me out of the rain while it all blows over.

Arrived in Hong Kong

I am here and it is currently 8:40 ish on Sunday morning I must admit travelling by air is still wonderful but long haul flights can leave you feel a little like you have been beaten over with a large pillow.

Today is a little over cast but I am hoping for better weather later in the week.

I am currently just in the arrivals area of the airport I have to sort out getting an octopus card as that seems to be the cheapest way to travel and then not getting lost as I find my way over to the hotel where I hope to dump my bag and then go exploring for a few hours just around the main bits of the islands so I get an idea how everything fits together.

Only one more sleep to go

It is official I know only have one more day to go and then my holiday starts. I finished work until a week on Tuesday today although I though I was never getting out of office today.

I then have to get on a plane at some far too early time in the morning to get to London and then another plan for a 11 hours to drop me off Hong Kong Sunday at 7:15 in the morning for a 6 day adventure.

I have printed out all the important details been reminded I have been very lucky on my choice of hotel I am staying on Hong Kong Island next to Victoria Park. The address can be found on Google Maps 148 Tung Lo Wan Rd, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It looks very swiss and has the oddest thing of a pool on the roof I am looking forward to trying out.

Once I am there I am sure I will bore you all with the details.

my birthday party

I decided this year to celebrate on the Friday before my birthday because having a party on a Monay night is never a good idea. Patrick, Hamish, Liz, Keith Jo and Chris came round. I gave them each two mini rolls and a large collection of sweets and icing with the comment to creat anythingthey wished or a dalek. Here are the results.

Fiction

As I mentioned a while back had managed to get round to a little more fiction. I have broken it down into two post. The first is several random short pieces which are only linked because I wrote them at the same time and the second is a word prompt from Musemuggers.

They are both on my insane journal just follow the links.

My first Dalek

Well here is the first one and I have learnt several things. I need to buy better swiss roll, icing sugar makes everything smell sweet and making dalek's is an awful lot of fun.

I need to go practice a little more as this one has a very bad lean but I am sure that can be corrected.

Radio 4

Most of the second week of the fringe was made up of Free radio 4 shows. The tickets cost nothing but fro the more popular shows you have to turn up early because more tickets are given out that seats (a little like airlines they assume not everyone will turn up) They do put this declaimer on the ticket but it seems people don't always read them.

All of the shows can be found here

Bye, Bye Edinburgh

Bye, Bye Edinburgh was a little bittersweet Jim Sweeney was doing his talking bits around interviews that were going to be edited in later of other peoples memories but this was his memories of his time at the fringe. It was bitter sweet as he explained his MS had progressed to such a stage this would be the last Edinburgh Fringe he would attend. It was great to hear his memories from arriving as a wide eyed 19 year old with a friend playing to a very empty house and the reviews in Scotsman through his growing fame and progressive illness. I was glad we had gone to see Paul Merton's Impro Chum's and he had been performing that night. If I want to see him in the future I will have to go to London. I will be interested to hear the end product that includes interview with Paul Merton and Barry Crier.

Front Row

Front Row is a programme I would never normally listen to but it was reviewing festival things so was more relevant that usual. It has a range of guests from all the festivals. The interview with Jamie Bell about Hallam Foe was really interesting, as was the review of a play dealing with a relationship between a teacher and pupil. It was a novel idea because it only shows a weekend of them together and leaves the audience to decide what happened and to make their own moral judgements.

Adam Hills

I have seen Adam Hills several years running but this was the first time I had seen him with his signer for the deaf. It made the show very different as I found myself watching her almost more that I was watching him. He also had a good start to the show as Batman and Bat-girl were in the front row and he spent several minutes talking to them finding out about them. The rest of his act was very funny as well he talked about so many different things he is much more an of an observational humorist talking about everyday life and the funny things that happen. He also got to dance on the roof of a car which is very impressive when he jumped off.

I have also learnt a few BSL signs of interesting words that will never be used in polite conversation but were interesting.
